프로젝트 개요 : 단순한 거리명이 아닌, ‘이동의 흐름’을 바꾸는 브랜딩

브랜드오프너는 서울 동대문구 신설동 거리의 네이밍 및 브랜딩 작업을 의뢰받았습니다.

의뢰 배경은 단순히 “예쁜 이름을 짓는 것”이 아니었습니다.

“지나가기만 하는 거리에서, 머무르고 싶어지는 거리로 만들고 싶다.”

이는 단순한 네이밍이 아닌, 도시의 동선을 관찰하고 사람들의 행태를 해석한 뒤,

그에 맞는 언어와 컨셉을 부여하는 도시 브랜딩 프로젝트였습니다.

우리는 이 프로젝트를 통해 단순한 공간을 ‘의미 있는 장소’로 전환하고자 했습니다.

브랜딩 배경 : ‘거리 만들기’의 유행 속에서 우리가 본 과제

해당 프로젝트가 진행되던 시기, 서울과 수도권에서는 일종의 ‘테마 거리’ 붐이 일고 있었습니다.

• 광진구의 ‘미가로’ (맛의 거리)

• 구로구의 ‘깔깔거리’ (위생과 신뢰를 강조한 먹자골목)

이번 제작 브랜딩 프로젝트는 서울시 동대문구 신설동에 위치한 거리입니다. 해당 거리에 상점과 가게들이 밀집해있어서 활성화가 필요하여 그에 필요한, 어울릴만한 네이밍 작업을 진행했습니다. 일단 해당 작업 시장조사부터 말씀드리자면 이 시기에는 한창 어떤 '거리'가 유행하고 있었습니다. 예를 들면 광진구 맛의 거리 '미가로', 손님이 안심하고 믿고 먹을 수 있는 깔끔한 음식을 제공하는 구로구의 '깔깔거리' 등이 있었고 서울시뿐 아니라 다양한 지역에서 거리 만들기가 유행처럼 일어났습니다.

브랜드오프너는 그것과 차별화를 염두하여야 했으며, 작업을 하며 검색창에 신설동에 관한 정보를 여러가지로 수집하였으며, 이것으로 거리에 대한 네이밍까지 도출하였으나 이름만 예쁜, 마음에 와닿지 않는, 유행만 쫓는 네이밍들로만 구성이 되어 있었기에 생각을 가다듬고 더욱 정답에 가까운 네이밍을 찾고 싶은 마음에 이끌려 직접 신설동을 찾아 갔습니다.

신설동 거리를 직접 와서 살핀 결과 '이 거리는 출퇴근하는 사람들의 유입인구가 많지만 다양한 먹거리와 볼거리가 있음에도 불구하고 머물지 않고 그냥 빠져나간다'라는 특징을 발견할 수 있었습니다. 그저 출퇴근의 용도로 지나쳐버리는 거리가 아닌 거리에 들어와서 맛보고 즐길 수 있는 거리의 컨셉과 명칭이 필요했습니다.

타겟층이 명확할수록 네이밍의 폭이 좁아져 만들기가 오히려 조금은 더 수월하지만, 유동인구가 많으니 연령층도 다양할 것이고 아이 어른 할 것 없이 누구나 이해하기 쉬워야하면서 이 거리의 특성을 내포하고 있는 네이밍으로 개발하도록 노력해야했습니다. 이렇듯 완성된 신설동의 거리 바로 '들락거리'입니다. '맛'에만 한정되어 있지도 않고 '멋'에도 한정되어 있지 않은 그저 당신이 오시는 것을 반길뿐, 부담주지 않는 분위기의 이름으로 탄생하였습니다. 맛과 멋, 다양한 문화와 즐길거리들을 모두 포괄할 수 있는 거리입니다. 들락(樂)거리를 통해 많은 사람들이 들어와, 그 안에 다양한 것들로 즐겼으면 좋겠습니다.
